Operations & Maintenance
Certified Electrician, Maintenance
Arecibo Observatory, PR
Job Description: Install, maintain, diagnose, repair, modify and test low, medium and high voltage electrical distribution systems, grounding, lightning protection, etc., according to NFPA/NEC70. Responsible for in-field preventative and emergency service of mission critical back-up systems – UPS.

Education:Associate degree from an accredited technical institution in an electrician program and 5 years of experience.

Qualifications: Knowledge of accepted practices, processes, materials, and tools for installation, repair and maintenance trades. Knowledge of Lightning Protection Systems per NFPA 780. Certified Electrician as per Puerto Rico College of Certified Electricians.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Install, service, repair, inspect and diagnose electrical systems and equipment
  • PMs on electrical equipment per documented procedures, manufacturer’s specifications, and NFPA/NEC standards
  • Thorough understanding of electrical distribution from power plant and main electrical sub-stations to end users
  • Must be capable of working in a maintenance environment
  • Troubleshoot a variety of electrical devices on voltages up to 13,200 volts
  • Responsible for electrical and emergency power systems
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics
  • Troubleshoot and repair motors, motor control centers, VFD's
  • Respond to electrical emergencies after hours on awkward locations and at Telescope suspended Platform 500 feet above ground
  • Provide technical support to the HVAC technicians

EHS Technician
Arecibo Observatory, PR
Job Description: Perform technical duties in programs related to environmental, health, safety, fire protection, and/or closely related EHS areas at the Arecibo Observatory. Technical work under the supervision of the AO EHS&S Manager supporting the implementation and evaluation of programs, procedures, and trainings designed to minimize risks to humans, animals and the environment. Provide technical support with reporting.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree and 2 years industry experience. Fluent in Spanish and English. Technical skill and knowledge of EHS area(s). Keeps current in equipment and standards and safety. Operates a limited variety/complexity of equipment/machinery/devices used in the handling hazardous and/or radiological waste materials. Basic knowledge of state and federal rules, regulations to determine Compliance. Trained in the applicable laws or inspection procedures through classroom and on-the-job training. OSHA General and/or Construction Industry 30 hrs. Knowledge with SPCC and SWPPP and other applicable EHS regulatory requirements. Developing Job Hazard Analysis.

Duties & Responsibilities: Perform entry-level technical duties on EHS programs. Follow established guidelines and procedures. Perform operational duties and expected to operate independently in carrying out assigned duties. Perform EHS technical duties in one or more areas on site with programs, typically involving coordination with various areas and may supervise the performance of routine technical assignments, such as inspections. Expected to plan work procedures and perform assigned duties independently. Prepare reports and work with local and federal government agencies. Inspect specific areas, may test equipment/processes, documents findings, take some corrective actions. Safely collects, prepares/packages, records, labels and transports hazardous and/or radiological waste materials. Provide Safety Tool Box.
