Operations & Maintenance
Heavy Equipment Operator
Kennedy Space Center, FL
Job Description: Independently operate motorized power construction equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, forklifts, graders, gradalls, backhoes, excavators, etc. and other equipment associated with roads maintenance. Perform any work assigned to the employees in the classification. Perform work in other lower classifications when incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignments. Position may require travel.

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Two plus years of experience operating heavy equipment working in a construction or road maintenance capacity. Must possess a valid Florida Class B CDL License. Must be able to acquire and maintain OSHA physical requirements and pass performance skills tests.

Perform all work tasks in compliance with Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force, laws and regulations. Operate equipment within normal safety limits. Work within energy management and environmental regulations, collective bargaining agreements, security, and standard safety regulations. Support efforts in hurricane preparations and other special program events required per Contract. Perform all work within established OSHA safety regulations, Kennedy Space Center policies, and contract work procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain training, certifications, licenses, permits, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
  • Provide efficient and safe operation of various road maintenance and construction equipment in the accomplishment of assigned work tasks. This occasionally includes determining work scope by reviewing work plans, supporting customer requirements, and from site drawings.
  • Perform required daily and pre-use equipment maintenance. Record findings on associated forms. Report anomalies or discrepancies through proper channels to schedule maintenance or repair.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections to ensure operability.
  • Load and unload trucks and other vehicles used to transport road and construction materials.
  • Install and maintain traffic and crowd control devices such as temporary signs, barricades, ropes, cones, flag traffic, etc.
  • Install and maintain traffic control signs and devices. This includes use of hand tools to install traffic control signs and posts.
  • Remove and install fencing and associated hardware and wire.
  • Provide guidance and direction to lower classification employees to ensure safe and efficient completion of work tasks.
  • Maintain logs and records. Utilize PDA’s or tablets to obtain work tasking assignments and to record work completion.
  • Maintain area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Attend scheduled training and safety classes required for certifications and area access.

High Voltage Electrician II
NASA Ames Research Center, CA
Qualifications:High School diploma or equivalent. Completion of recognized apprenticeship program (or equivalent education and/or experience) for Journey level electrician. Must have a minimum of 5 years relevant experience with high voltage equipment (600 AC Volts and above) and experience with low to medium voltage equipment & repairs. Must demonstrate knowledge of high voltage electrical theory and practices sufficiently to plan work independently on power distribution equipment. Understanding of, and willingness to comply with, electrical and work safety procedures including National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards. Ability to handle tools of the trade (amprobe's, amp meters, recording devices, etc), to work in awkward positions of crouching or bending etc. for a period of time, and to perform moderately heavy lifting. Must be able to read metering schematic, wiring, installation diagrams, etc. Ability to diagnose electrical trouble and then make repairs on equipment. Ability to perform new installations of high voltage equipment and electrical systems, if permitted. Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, a good driving record and the ability to operate automatic transmission vehicles and may operate a high lift truck. Must have and maintain certification in CPR, First Aid training, & Confined Space. Must be available to work overtime and available for callbacks.

Must pass a physical examination administered by a medical service. Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and maintain access to workplace facility. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Duties & Responsibilities: Perform Journey level and high voltage electrician work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the electrical substations, electrical distribution systems, and general low voltage utility controls under general supervision. Assignments can be received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions or employees may be expected to schedule their own work, determine work priorities. At this level, employees are expected to diagnose problems independently and determine the appropriate method and procedure needed to complete the work. Working with the Lead and co-workers, the High Voltage Electrician is expected to ensure that the work specifications conform to shop standards. May work with the Lead person to order materials needed for work. Must comply with applicable federal, state, NASA, OSHA, and environmental laws and regulations. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and able to handle potentially high-stress situations. Create and maintain a positive team atmosphere with effective interpersonal skills.

  • Follow truck maintenance schedule and keep an organized and clean truck / workspace
  • Work in areas of controlled access such as substations not open to unqualified individuals.
  • Work on high voltage power distribution systems 600 Volts AC and above
  • Splice and terminate high voltage cables using manufacturer and hand tape methods
  • Perform switching and maintenance in substations, switchyards, pad-mounted equipment and in underground vaults / manholes
  • Excellent customer service skills with the desire to exceed customer expectation
  • Responds to power outages during off-hours on a call back basis
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty equipment
  • Test and repair short-circuits, grounds and troubleshoots high voltage street light circuits
  • Install new equipment, including conduit, wire, cable, pull boxes, transformers and etc. for repairs and alterations in high voltage systems
  • Work with MAXIMO {CMMS} to input time and issue work orders
  • May assist in overseeing contractors to ensure safety regulations are being followed
  • Responsible for coordinating work to ensure the maintenance and integrity of the high volt system
  • Follow shop procedures for scheduling system outages
  • Ensure that safety rules are followed
